Create and Print a Veterinary Prescription in Indiana

PawthosX One allows Indiana veterinary practices to create paper prescriptions for medications that will be filled by an outside pharmacy. Veterinarians are exempt from Indiana’s mandatory electronic-prescribing law. Non-controlled prescriptions may be printed on ordinary paper. Before Creating the Prescription

Confirm that:

A valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship exists.
The veterinarian has reviewed and authorized the medication.
The client’s full legal name and address are correct.
The patient’s name and species are correct.
The veterinarian’s Indiana license information is current.
For a controlled substance, the veterinarian has an active Indiana Controlled Substance Registration and individual DEA registration.

Create the Prescription

Open the patient’s record.
Select New Medication Request or open the medication workflow from the current visit.
Search for and select the medication.
Enter:
- Medication name
- Strength or concentration
- Dosage form
- Quantity
- Dose, route and frequency
- Duration
- Complete directions
- Number of refills
- Prescribing veterinarian
Under Fulfillment Method, select Print/Fax.
Confirm the prescription contains:
- Client name and address
- Patient name and species
- Date issued
- Drug name, strength and dosage form
- Quantity
- Directions
- Refills
- Veterinarian name
- Practice address and telephone number
- Indiana veterinary license number
- DEA number when required
Select Generate Prescription.

Non-Controlled Prescriptions

Non-controlled prescriptions may be printed on ordinary white paper, provided all required prescription information is present. The form must contain two signature lines:

Dispense as Written
May Substitute

The veterinarian must sign the appropriate line.

Print using:

Actual size or 100% scale
Black ink
No browser headers or footers
No page scaling that reduces readability

Controlled-Substance Prescriptions

Do not print a controlled-substance prescription on ordinary paper.

Indiana requires approved security prescription paper containing specific physical security features, including an “Indiana Security Prescription” watermark, copying protections, quantity-range checkboxes, refill selections and two signature lines. Only one prescription may appear on each blank.

Prepare the Printer

Obtain security paper from an Indiana-approved vendor.
Load the security paper into the appropriate printer tray.
Test paper orientation using ordinary paper first.
Do not use an actual security blank for test printing.
Confirm that PawthosX text will not cover:
- Security features
- Quantity checkboxes
- Refill selections
- Required warning statement
- Signature lines

PawthosX supplies the prescription-specific information. It does not create or replace the physical Indiana security paper.

Print and Complete

Print only one medication on the security blank.
Check the appropriate quantity range:
- 1–24
- 25–49
- 50–74
- 75–100
- 101–150
- 151 and over
Select the correct refill option.
Confirm the prescription is dated on the date it is issued.
Have the veterinarian manually sign the appropriate substitution line.
Confirm the veterinarian’s name, practice address, Indiana license number and DEA number are present.

The name of a controlled substance cannot be preprinted on unused forms before the prescription is prepared for a specific patient.

Schedule II prescriptions cannot be refilled. Schedule III and IV prescriptions may not exceed five refills within six months under federal law.
